Case at a glance: A mining operation replaced steel grating on elevated walkways and access platforms around processing equipment after years of moisture, chemical contact, and regular traffic had caused significant corrosion. HotFRP supplied heavy-duty molded FRP grating for the replacement, with the selected panels matched to the existing support spacing and the loads expected during operation and maintenance.

Project Background

The walkways were used regularly by operators and maintenance crews and also accommodated tool carts and small equipment during servicing. The original steel grating had been coated, but the site conditions included dampness, spilled process water, and chemical residues. Corrosion was particularly evident around cut edges and support points, while rust also developed around fasteners and some panels became loose at the edges.

The project focused on replacing the grating panels while retaining the existing support structure, which remained serviceable. The objective was to address the recurring corrosion issues affecting the steel grating while maintaining the existing walkway layout and load requirements.

Material Selection

Heavy-duty molded FRP grating was selected after reviewing the existing support spacing and the loads expected during normal access and maintenance activities. The panel type was chosen to suit the project span and loading requirements rather than changing the supporting framework.

The FRP grating also offered lower panel weight than the steel grating being removed, which supported manual handling during installation. Its open mesh allowed water and small debris to pass through the walking surface rather than remain on top of the panels. The selected grating was matched to the existing support spacing using the applicable supplier span information for the panel type.

Installation Notes

Installation was carried out during a scheduled maintenance window, with sections of the walkway closed sequentially. The replacement FRP panels were lighter than the steel panels they replaced, allowing the crew to handle and position them during installation without the lifting equipment used for heavier panels.

A small number of panels required field cutting around pipe penetrations and equipment bases. The exposed edges were sealed with a compatible resin topcoat before installation to cover the cut surfaces and limit direct exposure of the glass reinforcement to site moisture and chemical contact.

The panels were installed using FRP grating clips. The support spacing was checked against the recommendations for the selected panel type before the layout was finalized. The existing framework was retained, and no additional steel supports were added because it met the required span limits for the selected grating.

Outcome and Observations

Based on the project observations provided, the replaced walkways remained in service without the recurring rust issues described for the previous steel grating. The maintenance team also reported that the new walking surface remained secure underfoot in wet conditions.

The open mesh continued to allow water and debris to pass through the panels, while the heavy-duty grating accommodated regular foot traffic and occasional wheeled loads during the reported operation. These observations relate to this project and its operating conditions rather than representing a universal performance claim for all FRP grating applications.

Key Project Considerations

This case highlights several practical considerations when replacing steel grating in a mining walkway: matching the grating type to the existing support spacing and expected loads, retaining a serviceable support structure where appropriate, planning for field cuts around equipment and penetrations, and sealing exposed cut edges before installation.
